In the recent past, there has been a huge boom in men pursuing aesthetic surgery. Dr. Mirwat Sami has seen an increasing number of male patients at Houston Oculofacial Plastic Surgery seeking cosmetic enhancements both surgical (eyelid lifts, blepharoplasty, midface lifts) and nonsurgical (Botox, Fillers, Laser skin rejuvenation and skin care products). And the most common reason – to stay competitive in today’s job market, especially with the current tough Houston economy from falling oil prices.
National trends agree. According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the number of cosmetic procedures for men has increased by more than 106% between 1997 and 2012.
Dr. Sami was featured on Fox 26 News Houston KRIV NBC with Melissa Wilson and Rita Garcia (Anchors- Fox 26 News Houston) discussing “Masculine Makeover” – Aired June 24th, 2016 Fox 26 Houston KRIV Fox, 4261 Southwest Freeway, Houston, TX 77027.
“Men are realizing that cosmetic surgery can help them look as good as they feel” says Dr. Mirwat Sami. Some men consider it an investment, with a carefully though out plan for achieving their goals to stay looking youthful and refreshed and perhaps give them a competitive edge in the job market.
Dr. Mirwat Sami says: “You have men that are at the top of their careers, have great vitality, brilliant ideas, but they might not look it and that is certainly not acceptable to men anymore”. Plastic surgery is no longer just a woman’s domain and according to Dr. Sami, “women have been benefiting from plastic surgery for many decades and men are now also getting on the bandwagon.”
“Eyelid surgery is definitely one of the top surgical procedures that men are undergoing, both for medical reasons and cosmetic. Some of the other procedures that are nonsurgical such as botox, fillers, lasers, those are all procedures that men are very interested in now.”
It was once taboo for men to admit to having any cosmetic procedures but times have changed. It is not really a question of vanity, it is more about men maintaining a positive self-image. While some men are taking small steps to maintaining a youthful, radiant glow, a growing number of men are opting for cosmetic surgery to tailor their look for a workplace where appearances matter.
