Dermal fillers at Houston Oculofacial Plastic Surgery offer a non-surgical, efficient method to enhance your natural beauty. With noticeable results, they are a beneficial option for both men and women.

With time, our face tends to lose volume, and this, together with loss of skin elasticity and actinic damage, results in sagging, droopiness, and hollowness. The aging process varies from person to person, and the degree of volume loss is also variable.

Additionally, some might already have a degree of volume deficiency in certain areas, leading to a “gaunt” or hollow look from the start; they might consider cosmetic procedures to overcome this.

AGEING RESULTS IN COLLAGEN LOSS

Aging and sun damage lead to wrinkles and sagging by reducing collagen and elastin in our skin. Botulinum toxin can ease wrinkles from facial expressions like smiling or frowning, but fillers are needed for areas with volume loss or permanent lines.

There is now an increasing trend towards minimally invasive techniques. According to recent surveys by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, fillers come in second to Botox in popularity among the top 5 nonsurgical cosmetic procedures performed in the US.

DR. SAMI SPECIALIZES IN DERMAL FILLERS

Dr. Sami‘s vast experience with dermal fillers and her keen aesthetic sense for facial appearances have led her to devote an entire clinic to filler injections for her cosmetic patients. At her practice, she uses HA (hyaluronic acid) fillers, including Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, and Voluma.

Injectable dermal fillers can plump thin lips, enhance shallow contours, soften facial creases, remove wrinkles, and improve the appearance of recessed scars. They are great at smoothing, tightening, plumping, and volumizing with virtually no downtime. Plus, you get instant gratification with most of the more popular products.

LIQUID FACELIFT

Dermal fillers have been called “liquid facelifts” because they offer many of the benefits of a small surgical facelift without downtime. Although they can’t help with excess sagging skin, these soft tissue fillers can add more volume and provide immediate results.

Some dermal fillers can be used with other skin rejuvenation treatments, such as injections of botulinum toxin.

We encourage you to take a few minutes to learn more about the rejuvenating treatments we offer listed in the Cosmetic Procedures section.

THE IMPORTANCE OF COLLAGEN AND ELASTIN

The basic building blocks of our skin are elastin and collagen. Elastin is an elastic fiber found just underneath the skin, and collagen is at a deeper level and is found in many different varieties. Basically, together, they give our skin resilience, texture, and the feeling of health. Hyaluronic acid is an integral support molecule for collagen and elastin to help keep our skin looking young. As we age and decreased hydration occurs, we lose vital hyaluronic acid, collagen, and elastin. Environmental exposures to the sun, smoking, and pollution also contribute to the loss of these essential skin structures. As a result of this process, we develop wrinkles, lines, and hollows.

Dr. Sami is an exceptional surgeon and physician. She is a very caring physician and takes the time to listen to the needs and desires of her patients. She is gifted aesthetically in cosmetic surgery, reconstructive surgery, Botox, and filler injections.

TYPES OF DERMAL FILLERS

Dermal fillers can be divided into two categories: Temporary and Semi-Permanent. Hyaluronic Acid, or HA, fillers that we use in our practice are temporary fillers.

Injecting hyaluronic acid generates volume in the face, giving it a healthy, youthful appearance. When injected, the HA molecules draw in water and cause the tissue underneath to swell. They are made of biodegradable, non-animal HA and, unlike collagen, pose no risk of allergic reaction or rejection by the body. The other wonderful thing about HA fillers is that if you don’t like the effect, we can inject an enzyme called hyaluronidase, again something found naturally in the body, that will dissolve it completely or partially.

HA fillers include Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, and Voluma. They differ in their molecular size, water absorption, longevity, and the plane of depth of injections.

It is these characteristics, together with patients’ unique personal features, that help us decide which filler to use in different areas. For example, the tear-trough or under-eye area, with its thin and translucent skin, warrants the use of a product with a smaller molecular size and less water absorption, as opposed to the midface and cheeks, where a more robust molecular size filler would be a more viable option.

WHAT AREAS CAN FILLERS ADDRESS?

When deciding where to inject filler, there are a few features that need to be first carefully considered by your surgeon. Skin is examined for texture and elasticity, tone, and laxity. Next, the areas of volume loss, such as the cheek and under-eye area, are carefully examined. Areas of sag, such as jowls, are also looked at. Also, scars, surgical incisions, and genetic bony structures must be considered.

Once the face is well-studied, the areas of concern can be discussed at length, and a game plan can be created. The most frequent areas of concern include under-eye “dark circles,” tear trough deformity, midface sag, jowls, nasolabial folds, receding lips, laugh lines, and scars.

THE BENEFITS OF DERMAL FILLER INJECTIONS

Dr. Sami can use the various fillers to help her patients achieve a refreshed, youthful, and invigorated appearance without looking “overdone.” With her background in Oculoplastics, she is one of the few plastic surgeons who can safely and effectively use filler in the periorbital region to address dark circles and hollows under the eyes and crow’s feet. In several instances, this can help patients avoid more invasive surgery, such as eyelid lifts for a few years, by masking the signs of aging with fillers and other rejuvenating techniques.

Dr. Sami has used dermal fillers in other interesting, unique, and perfectly safe ways with fantastic aesthetic outcomes. From perking up the hook-end of a patient’s nose to a more Romanesque quality to filling in body-piercing scars to correcting brow asymmetry, Dr. Sami’s filler clinics always “fill up,” so to speak!

Evidence suggests that our perception of physical beauty is hardwired into our brains and is based on how closely symmetric someone’s features are. Beauty depends on balance, rhythm, proportion, emphasis, and unity. Take any attractive celebrity and look at each feature separately. No one has perfect features or perfect symmetry. But together, those imperfect features create an almost perfectly attractive visage due to the harmony and balance of all the elements. So, in other words, the lips that would look perfect on one face might not sit well on another.

AFTER DERMAL FILLER INJECTIONS

Because dermal filler treatments are non-surgical, there is no lengthy recovery period following the treatment. There may be some swelling and slight bruising around the injection areas. These issues should subside over the following days. Most normal activities can be resumed right away, but strenuous physical activity should be avoided for a few days.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What Should I Expect During the Filler Injection Procedure?

The procedure is quick, typically taking 30 minutes to an hour, with minimal discomfort. Patients in Houston are often pleased with the simplicity of the process and the immediate return to daily activities.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?

The longevity of dermal fillers varies by type. The longevity of hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, the type we provide to our patients, varies based on the product and the area treated, typically lasting from 6 to 18 months. Over time, the body naturally absorbs the filler, gradually diminishing the volume-enhancing effects.

Are Dermal Fillers Safe?

When administered by a qualified professional like Dr. Sami, dermal fillers are safe. However, as with any medical procedure, there are risks involved. It’s important to discuss potential side effects with Dr. Sami during the consultation.

How Do I Choose the Right Type of Filler?

Choosing the right filler depends on your aesthetic goals, the area being treated, and Dr. Sami’s advice. A consultation with a skilled practitioner like her in Houston will help determine the best filler type for your needs.

Can Dermal Fillers Be Used in Combination with Other Cosmetic Procedures?

Yes, dermal fillers can be effectively combined with other treatments, such as Botox or laser therapies, for a comprehensive facial rejuvenation strategy. This combination can address many concerns, from fine lines to skin texture and tone.

Is There Any Downtime After Receiving Filler Injections?

Most patients experience minimal downtime and can return to daily activities immediately after treatment. Some may experience temporary redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites, which typically resolves within a few days.

How Can I Ensure the Best Results with Dermal Fillers?

Choosing an experienced practitioner with Dr. Sami’s caliber is critical to achieving the best results. Additionally, following her pre- and post-treatment instructions will help minimize side effects and enhance the outcome.

Are There Any Restrictions After Getting Fillers?

Patients are advised to avoid strenuous exercise, exposure to extreme heat, and alcohol consumption for 24 hours following treatment to minimize swelling and bruising.

Can Dermal Fillers Be Reversed?

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, allowing for adjustments or reversal of the effects if necessary. This option adds a layer of safety and flexibility to the treatment.

How Do I Know If I Am a Good Candidate for Dermal Fillers?

Good candidates for dermal fillers are individuals looking to address signs of aging, such as wrinkles and volume loss, or to enhance facial features. A consultation with Dr. Sami can determine if fillers are suitable for your goals and medical history.
